Dry Needling Therapy

Dry Needling Therapy, also known as Trigger Point Dry Needling or Myofascial Trigger Point Dry Needling, is an advanced physiotherapy technique used to relieve muscle pain, reduce tightness, and restore normal muscle function.

In this treatment, very fine sterile needles are inserted into specific tight bands of muscle known as trigger points. These trigger points are often described as painful “muscle knots” that can cause both local pain and referred pain to other parts of the body.

Unlike injections, no medicine is injected, which is why it is called dry needling.

At ProHealth Bone & Joint Speciality Clinic, Kharghar, dry needling is performed by experienced physiotherapists under the guidance of Dr Suman Gupta to provide safe and effective pain relief.

How Does Dry Needling Work?

When the needle is inserted into a trigger point, it causes a small involuntary muscle contraction called a Local Twitch Response (LTR). This response helps:

  • Release tight muscle bands
  • Improve blood circulation
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Decrease pain
  • Restore normal muscle function
  • Improve range of motion
  • Accelerate tissue healing

The needling also stimulates the nervous system to release natural pain-relieving chemicals such as endorphins.

Benefits of Dry Needling Therapy

Dry Needling offers numerous benefits, including:

  • Immediate and long-lasting pain relief
  • Reduction in muscle spasms and tightness
  • Improved flexibility and mobility
  • Enhanced sports performance and recovery

  • Improved posture and movement patterns
  • Better muscle activation and function

How Is Dry Needling Different from Acupuncture?

Dry Needling

  • Based on modern anatomy and trigger point science
  • Targets tight muscles and trigger points
  • Focuses on pain relief and muscle recovery
  • Commonly performed by physiotherapists

Acupuncture

  • Based on traditional Chinese medicine
  • Targets meridian energy points
  • Focuses on balancing body energy
  • Commonly performed by acupuncturists

What Happens During a Dry Needling Session?

  • Detailed assessment by the physiotherapist
  • Identification of trigger points
  • Skin cleaning with antiseptic
  • Insertion of sterile disposable needles
  • Muscle twitch response may occur
  • Needles may remain for a few minutes or be moved gently
  • Post-treatment stretching and exercise advice

A typical session lasts 20–45 minutes depending on the condition.

Does Dry Needling Hurt?

Most patients experience only a brief pinprick sensation. When the needle reaches a trigger point, you may feel:

  • Muscle twitch
  • Mild cramping
  • Dull ache
  • Temporary soreness

These sensations are normal and usually indicate that the treatment is working effectively.

Aftercare Following Dry Needling

After treatment, you may experience mild soreness for 24–48 hours. To enhance recovery:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Perform gentle stretching
  • Use a hot or cold pack if needed
  • Avoid strenuous activity for the rest of the day
  • Follow prescribed exercises

Contraindications: Who Should Avoid Dry Needling?

Dry Needling may not be suitable for:

  • Pregnancy (certain areas)
  • Children
  • Patients with bleeding disorders
  • Patients on blood thinners
  • Active infection
